If you need one screenshot, use GoFullPage. It's free, it's excellent, and 11 million people use it for good reason. If you need 40 screenshots of the same site with names you can find things by, that's a different job, and doing it by hand is where an afternoon goes.

Use GoFullPage when

  • You want one page, right now.
  • The page is behind a login, and you are already signed in.

What changes at twenty pages

One page with an extension is two clicks, and nothing beats that. The work doesn't scale with the page though, it scales with the count. Twenty pages at two sizes is forty captures: browse, capture, save, name it something you will recognize later, resize the window, do it again.

The naming is the part that bites. Forty files called screenshot.png through screenshot-39.png are worth very little in three weeks. SiteHaul names every file from its URL, so the folder stays readable long after you've forgotten the order you captured them in.

Questions

Is SiteHaul a GoFullPage alternative?

Only for whole-site work. GoFullPage captures the page you are looking at, and for that job it's excellent and free, so there's no reason to pay for anything. SiteHaul is worth it when you need every page of a site at two sizes with consistent filenames, which is a job GoFullPage was never built for.

Can GoFullPage capture a whole website?

Not in one go. It captures the current tab, so a whole site means browsing to each page and capturing it, then repeating at a second window size if you need mobile. For a 20 page site that is 40 captures and 40 filenames.

Does SiteHaul upload my screenshots anywhere?

No, and neither does GoFullPage. Both run on your own machine. If you are comparing against a hosted screenshot service, that's where the difference is real: those render every page on someone else's servers.

Can SiteHaul capture pages I have to log in to see?

Yes, two ways: HTTP basic auth for a server password, or a username and password that SiteHaul signs in with through the site's own login form (WordPress is found automatically, anything else takes the login URL). What it can't do is use a session you already have, so a page behind single sign-on or two-factor login is one where GoFullPage still wins: it captures whatever tab you have open, already signed in.

Do I have to stop using GoFullPage?

No. They answer different questions and most people who buy SiteHaul keep the extension installed for one-off grabs. Reach for the extension when you want one page, and SiteHaul when you want the set.

What about sites that hijack scrolling?

Some sites don't really scroll: they hold the page one screen tall and slide the content past you. A full-page screenshot of a site built that way captures mostly empty space, whichever tool takes it, and an extension has no way around that. SiteHaul recognises these sites and captures them a screen at a time, then joins the tiles into one image. It takes longer than a normal page, and the app says so while it works.
